Hi, my name is David Windsor and I am an OTEN graduate. I work as a supervisor in emergency services at an open pit iron ore mine which encompasses over 57,500 square kilometres and employs between 2000 to 3000 contractors and staff and our emergency responses vary from small to large scale events.
On the 9 th July 2013 I had successfully completed a unit from the Public Safety package – Firefighting Operations related to responding to wildfires. This provided me with an understanding of wildfire behaviour and strategies to prevent and respond to wild fires.
On the 19th October 2013, a wildfire began from what was believed to be a lightning strike approximately 40 kilometres North West of our location and over the next few days, it travelled to our doorstep.
Having completed the unit from the Public Safety package I was able to understand key components of what was going to occur based on fuel load assessment, relative humidity, temperature, wind direction and terrain.
I was also able to confidently advise management and lead a team of 20 emergency response team members who had little to no experience with fighting wildfires. This confidence was obtained by completing OTEN training.”
