When I started my course I was a 32 year old mother of 2 small children. I was considering my options for returning to work. I’d always wanted to work in home and community care. I choose to study with OTEN as I could work at my own pace and importantly from home. Just 3 months into my studies we were surprised and excited to find out we’d be expecting our third baby. I was unsure how I’d cope, how would I finish? Especially with 100 hours of work placement yet to be completed, and a high risk pregnancy. But I felt even more determined. I put my head down and powered on. I fitted my never ending appointments around my course requirements and kept focussed on completion. My due date and course completion date were only weeks apart, and time melted away. I had submitted everything online, except one subject. I had my baby boy, and a few days after I returned home, I sent in the final module. Passed! So now I’m a 33 year old mother of 3 small children, with the qualification I need to return to the workforce to the job I really want.

I was raised in South Africa and have been profoundly deaf since birth.
After graduating at the St Vincent School for the Deaf, I enrolled a course at Architectural Technology through Technikon in Johannesburg, which is equivalent to TAFE.
I was struggling with the course due to a lack of support for the deaf
students during that time and I was compelled to withdraw after 2 years.
Then I enrolled at another college, called the Design College, where I
finally obtained my Interior Design Diploma in 2000
I moved to Australia in 2004 after meeting my future husband Trevor and our baby daughter, Gemma, was born in October 2011. Firstly, I worked as a Senior Exhibition Designer in Banksmeadow until 2007. I found the position limiting, therefore, I applied for another position at Woolworths’ Headquarter in Bella Vista, which I was successful.
While working full time at Woolworths as the Design Manager in National Store Planning/ Design and Construction
, I was given the opportunity to study Architectural Technology through correspondence to OTEN during my private times.
While doing the course, it was tough, having to juggle with full time work, raising baby Gemma and my studies. With the wonderful support demonstrated by Kerri Stefais during the course of my studies, I finally graduated in March 2013 with a Diploma awarded to me.
At Woolworths, I was also recognised for my success at TAFE and I was then promoted as Senior Designer for Victoria and Tasmania region in early 2013. The position I hold requires skills in designing and planning new supermarkets/refurbishing existing stores across Tasmania.
The course at OTEN had actually opened my door to further success and I was recognised as one of the best store designers in the team.
In July 2013, I was awarded as the NSW Deaf Employee of the Year precisely for that reason.
I was grateful for the wonderful supp

I recently completed my course of study through OTEN. The training not only allowed me to progress in my career as a Fireman but has given me invaluable knowledge. Prior to commencing my studies I was a very nervous public speaker, I was not confident in my teaching styles and was pretty well clueless when it came to preparing training for my colleagues. Now, thanks to OTEN, I was able to study at my own pace, in a place I was comfortable and still achieved great results. I am now much more confident in providing training to my colleagues and can easily stand in front of others and give clear and precise training and instructions. It really has made such a difference for me personally and professionally, the ability to use what I have learnt and apply it in such a way that gives me much more self confidence has literally changed my life. The course was well set out and I felt very much in control of my studies at all times. Thanks for an invaluable learning experience OTEN.

I migrated to Australia with my young child from a non English speaking country a couple of years ago. I thought my dreams of becoming an accountant wouldn’t be possible anymore as I was working full time and had family commitments. My boss knew about my situation and recommended me to enrol at Oten. Today I am happy I made the right decision and followed her advise. Trying to balance family, work and studies is not an easy task. You need great determination and the flexibility that Oten offers.
I was able to finished my diploma and this has opened doors for me at my workplace as I was offered to work as an assistant accountant. Having my diploma in accounting has inspired me to further enrich my career and has helped me through the process of now becoming an university student.

Since completing my OTEN course, I have been able to use the knowledge I have gained and put it to good use in my role at a Medical Research company. Through applying what I learnt at OTEN to my work, I received employee of the month in both July and December 2013. It also helped me to achieve recognition as the runner up Office Employee of the Year for 2013! (I am receiving my award in the photo). The completion of my OTEN course has changed my life in that it gave me the drive and more importantly, the confidence to apply myself to my job in a way that I wasn’t able to before completing my course. I feel comfortable in knowing that what I learnt by doing my OTEN course, was a fundamental building block in helping me to be as successful as I have in such a short time. Thanks OTEN :)

Hi, my name is Monique, I am 44 years young and would like to share my experience of successfully graduating in Certificate lll In Dental Assisting through Oten.
After working in Retail for my whole working life, I decided at the age of 42, that I desperately needed a change in my working life; I thought Dental Assisting sounded like an interesting and rewarding job, and applied for a position in Canberra.
One year after starting my position as Dental Receptionist/Assistant, I decided I wanted to learn more in depth Dental Assisting. I wanted to know what all these terms and words etc were, that all the dentists were using in everyday language, some I picked up myself, others I knew I would have to learn through a course.
So in 2012, I enrolled with Oten, the best decision I ever made. I now work full time in surgery with a Dentist, and have a very good understanding of each other, and work well together.
Without the help, excellent communication and support from my Oten teachers, I’m not sure if I would have completed my studies. They were an incredible support to me and I absolutely LOVE Dental Assisting. THANKYOU

What a great year 2013 was, completing my Community Services Work Diploma, full of new experiences and everyone at OTEN helped me tremendously.
I hadn’t studied for 30 years! Yes, you read that right! Left school too early, worked and worked, and then decided that I wanted to gain some qualifications for the rest of my working life – after all we’re all going to be in the workforce until we’re 80 it seems!
Anyway, I signed up for the diploma, nervous but excited and got started.
The weirdest thing happened; I feel in love!
With study! So unbelievable but it’s true!
Combined with my part time work, family commitments and me time, I worked through my diploma, found a work placement site and finished my diploma at the end of 2013, after 11 months, with a Distinction!
It was the best year as it was the best way of studying for me.
Using my diploma, I have fast tracked into a degree course with CSU, Distance Education, in Social Science. My diploma took two years off the degree which is just fantastic and studying through OTEN got me ready for Uni.
p.s my work placement has offered me a job!
