‘It will remain difficult for individuals to juggle work and study but if you are determined and willing to beat the odds, what you will gain in the end is well worth every sacrifice and effort’.
Juggling work and family as well as study isn’t so hard for those who are serious about changing careers. Studying when you are holding a fulltime job is demanding and even daunting but if you approach things systematically, it should be possible to juggle work, study and family.
During my course, I have learned how to manage my time, which makes me more matured and more responsible.
Thanks to the Open Training and Education Network (OTEN) distance education; this helps me combine home, work and studying whilst upgrading my skills and knowledge. This is what I called ‘Learning while earning’.
Thanks to my experienced instructor, who fully guided me throughout my course, which I have a direct pipeline via emails, phone, chat where I can get my questions answered directly.

Hi, my name is David Windsor and I am an OTEN graduate. I work...
Hi, my name is David Windsor and I am an OTEN graduate. I work as a supervisor in emergency services at an open pit iron ore mine which encompasses over 57,500 square kilometres and employs between 2000 to 3000 contractors and staff and our emergency responses vary from small to large scale events.
On the 9 th July 2013 I had successfully completed a unit from the Public Safety package – Firefighting Operations related to responding to wildfires. This provided me with an understanding of wildfire behaviour and strategies to prevent and respond to wild fires.
On the 19th October 2013, a wildfire began from what was believed to be a lightning strike approximately 40 kilometres North West of our location and over the next few days, it travelled to our doorstep.
Having completed the unit from the Public Safety package I was able to understand key components of what was going to occur based on fuel load assessment, relative humidity, temperature, wind direction and terrain.
I was also able to confidently advise management and lead a team of 20 emergency response team members who had little to no experience with fighting wildfires. This confidence was obtained by completing OTEN training.”

When I first decided to study with OTEN, It was more a decision...
When I first decided to study with OTEN, It was more a decision I had made out of boredom. I was for Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast for about a year as a receptionist, which I’m sure anyone can agree that answering phones for a living isn’t exactly something you dream big for. I always had a keen interest in accounting and numbers had always been my strong point. Failure to complete year 12 had me reluctant to try or that I would even be eligible. I gave it a go and enrolled in Certificate IV Accounting. As my job progressed as did my understanding of what I was studying. I gained extreme confidence workwise and as management could see my progress I took on more and more. One problem - I was still just the receptionist. Eventually my Certificate arrived, I dropped this under my bosses nose and with a bit of umming and aaahing he made me Assistant financial controller. Which came with many advantages. (see pic attached). I am now on my way to getting my degree which would have never been possible without the help of OTEN and its teachers. Thank you OTEN, you have changed my life.

OTEN has given me more than accounting skills: it’s helped...
OTEN has given me more than accounting skills: it’s helped focus my career, given me a direction that had been lacking for nearly 5 years and reminded me that the sky’s the limit and anything is possible. Moreover, OTEN has re-energised my passion for learning through enjoyment of my accounting subjects and great results.
Since completing my Certificate IV, I’ve successfully analysed the accounts payable system for my global company and designed a new system that is currently being trialled. Following this success my company offered me the opportunity to become the Financial Analyst in the NSW and ACT region, with responsibility for: the financial aspects of the region; two additional team members; and delivering training on the financial model of the business and financial systems.
My career goal is to start my own business helping micro-businesses, solo-preneurs and craft based start-ups recognise that financial management and accounting are as essential as marketing and business development. My focus would be teaching, advising and helping these businesses establish financial systems and processes that can support growth in a thriving industry. OTEN helped me work toward this goal with essential skills like time management, understanding GST obligations and boosting my motivation.

Oten has helped me grately without the support from Oten staff...
Oten has helped me grately without the support from Oten staff and my own grandmother i wouldnt have accomplished my year ten. I am fifteen years old and i am now enrolled and attending tafe, doing Horticulture cerificate two. without Oten i would’nt have been able to even attend tafe because of my age but, Oten has given me opportunities i couldnt even dream of having. From growing up in a troubled home and behaving inexcusable at school Oten has changed my view on education and life. I now can envision and eventually will pursue my goals and have the life i have always wanted. I would undoubtedly recommend Oten to anyone. Oten is a great place for someone, for anyone to take step to reaching their life goals and pursuing their dreams. Studying with oten has boosted my confidence in ways i couldnt imagine, now i can go to class and do my work and co-operate because i feel better as person thanks to Oten. I am extremely happy that Oten provided me with an alternative pathway to achieve my year ten through an adult environment. I look forward to my very bright future which was once bleak and sad because i didnt think i was capable of being where i am today. Thank you Oten for the support and for assisting me to become great.

ODE TO OTEN
"SIMPLY THE BEST"
There once was a mature lady from Taree
Who required the services of a referee
She turned to OTEN
Who had a notion
That here was the perfect trainee
The poor lady had become redundant
Where staff were over abundant
Despite years of experience
And plenty of resilience
She refused to become recumbent
So she traded work for study
To the surprise of her kids and her hubby
To avoid unemployment
And remain totally buoyant
She refused to be nobody’s dummy
The results were really amazing
And everyone was quite appraising
With confidence beaming
And self-esteem redeeming
The proof was all in the training
So it was time to apply for that position
With a resume and plenty of ambition
With training and assessments
Corrections and amendments
Who would dare repudiate her submission?
The day of reckoning came
A manager’s position with a chain
With the interview bagged
And her future flagged
She proved over 50’s still reign

Studying English for Academic Purposes helped me much to improve...
Studying English for Academic Purposes helped me much to improve my language skills. I took pride in myself and my work during completing the whole course. Now I feel more relaxed during my casual and formal conversations. Moreover, I became more energetic and enthusiastic young member of the workforce seeking apprenticeship opportunities within the marketing industry. I am also quite keen to learn and develop new skills in order to have a satisfying career. At the moment I am interested to take up Master of Business Administration studies. EAP course appeared to be a perfect choice during my education path and I would like to recommend it to everyone from non-English speaking countries . If You really want to make a difference and minimalize your English barrier in communication, EAP course is the best way to derive considerable satisfaction from performing well.

I started studying a Certificate II in Tourism through OTEN...
I started studying a Certificate II in Tourism through OTEN during early 2013 alongside studying for my NSW Higher School Certificate. I took on the course as a way to develop a greater understanding for the tourism industry while participating in a school based traineeship at the local Tourist Information Centre. This course has helped change my life for the better because it provided me with an extensive list of issues to discuss within one of my HSC courses, Business Services. As a result I achieved a HSC mark of 91 and was ranked 5 th in the state for the course. This mark has now allowed me to attend University and study a Bachelor of Laws in 2014. My OTEN course also allowed me to interact better with customers and provide a high level of service which helped me to successfully obtain work after completing school. Completing my Tourism Course also contributed to my recent award of Ashford Junior Citizen of the year, which I was extremely proud of. I have attached a photo of myself with Australia day Ambassador Joseph Tawadros at the presentation. I would never hesitate to complete further studies through OTEN, everyone was very helpful.
