This qualification is designed to reflect the job roles of contract bookkeepers and employees performing bookkeeping tasks for organisations in a range of industries. It includes the preparation and lodgement of business and instalment activity statement tasks and the provision of advice or dealing with the Commissioner on behalf of a taxpayer in relation to the activity statements. Individuals in these roles apply theoretical and specialist knowledge and skills to work autonomously and exercise judgement in completing routine and non-routine activities.

Licensing/Regulatory Information
Work functions in the occupational areas where this qualification may be used are subject to regulatory requirements. Refer to the FNS Implementation Guide Companion Volume or the relevant regulator for specific guidance on requirements.

Persons providing a business activity statement (BAS) service must be registered by the Tax Practitioners Board and this qualification is currently cited as meeting the educational requirements for registration. Other conditions apply including a designated period of experience. Persons seeking BAS agent registration should check current registration requirements with the Board as this is reviewed regularly.

This qualification was recently updated. If you do not complete the superseded qualification FNS40215 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping by 31/10/2018, you will be transferred into the new qualification FNS40217 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping for the remainder of your enrolment period.

You don't need to study what you already know! The skills, knowledge and experience you have gained from your previous learning, work experience and life in general may be taken into account.

To apply for recognition in one or more units you must clearly show that you have the equivalent and relevant skills, knowledge and experience of the unit or group of units.

For Credit transfer where you have completed previous studies either with TAFE NSW or with another tertiary provider complete the Enrolment Adjustment - Credit - Previous Studies form, and include any required evidence.

For Recognition of Prior Learning, attach your evidence to a completed Enrolment Adjustment – Credit – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) form and submit for assessment.

To complete this qualification you will need a computer, or regular access to an IBM compatible computer with up to date virus protection and:
• access to broadband internet connection (preferable) or dialup internet
• email access which will be used for subject and course notices
• Microsoft Office 2010 or later
• a printer

Apple Mac computers can be used as long as the computer can run Windows software.

You will need to buy textbooks. Many units require textbooks and these may range from $50-$100+ each.
OTEN will provide learning materials in this qualification in the form of:
• online access.

To assist students in their studies, an online support site (OLS) is available. When you enrol with OTEN, you will be supplied with the details to access this site.
Studying at home.
• Assessment work which you are required to complete online and/or submit electronically via OTEN’s student web site (OLS).
• There are workplace simulations (end of unit tests) for some units. This information is available in the unit learning materials.

Smart and Skilled Student Fees

The cost of this course will vary based on your eligibility for a Smart and Skilled Student Fee. Eligibility criteria can be found on the Smart and Skilled website or you can call us on 131 601 for further information and advice.

Trainees: From 2016 if you are starting a traineeship that is on the NSW Skills List, your Smart and Skilled fee for the whole qualification will not be more than $1,000.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled. The student fee you will need to pay, will be determined according to your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, you may also be eligible for a concession fee, fee exemption or fee free scholarship. Payment by instalments is available.

You may continue with an enrolment into this course if you are not eligible for subsidised training, however the full training fee will be applicable. There are conditions to enrolment if you are a Temporary Visa Holder. To discuss your visa status and eligibility to enrol please phone 131 241.
