This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of early childhood education settings who work within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. They support the implementation of an approved learning framework, and support childrens wellbeing, learning and development. ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

This qualification is for people who want to work as an early childhood educator in a centre-based service and family day care. This is the nationally regulated entry level qualification for working in early childhood education and care.
You will learn how to use a national learning framework, regulations and quality standards to support the education and care of children from birth to school age. You will be able to facilitate play and ensure children's health and safety while supporting their learning and well-being.
"To be assessed as competent in this qualification, students are required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours work placement with specific age groups.
NOTE: you will need to arrange your own work placement by finding an appropriate licensed and regulated early childhood service, working with a range of children aged birth to 5 years. Students who are currently working or volunteering in a licensed early childhood service

NEW COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

WORK PLACEMENTS

Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

1. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES

Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Children’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. Visit:

2. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT

Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information.

3. NSW HEALTH

Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
• Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
• Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
• Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

4. AGED CARE WORK - Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a Federal Criminal Record Check. Visit:

All students are required to complete 120 hours of work placement in a regulated Child Care Service which caters for children aged between 0-6. You will be responsible for organising your placement/s and submitting the appropriate applications to OTEN Children's Services. A minimum of 80 hours of this Work Placement will need to be completed specifically with children 0-2 years of age. In all Work Placement settings, students must have a minimum Diploma trained staff member supervising them throughout the 120 hours.

Students need to be aware that Family Day Care can only be used as a Work Placement setting if the Family Day Carer supervising them holds a Diploma and there are at least 3 different children aged 0-2 and 3 different children aged 2-6 enrolled on the same day. School Aged Care settings are not accepted as Work Placement settings for this course.

You don't need to study what you already know! The skills, knowledge and experience you have gained from your previous learning, work experience and life in general may be taken into account.

To apply for recognition in one or more units you must clearly show that you have the equivalent and relevant skills, knowledge and experience of the unit or group of units.

For Credit transfer where you have completed previous studies either with TAFE NSW or with another tertiary provider complete the Enrolment Adjustment - Credit - Previous Studies form, and include any required evidence.

For Recognition of Prior Learning, attach your evidence to a completed Enrolment Adjustment – Credit – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) form and submit for assessment.

Smart and Skilled Student Fees

The cost of this course will vary based on your eligibility for a Smart and Skilled Student Fee. Eligibility criteria can be found on the Smart and Skilled website or you can call us on 131 241 for further information and advice.

Trainees: From 2016 if you are starting a traineeship that is on the NSW Skills List, your Smart and Skilled fee for the whole qualification will not be more than $1,000.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled. The student fee you will need to pay, will be determined according to your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, you may also be eligible for a concession fee, fee exemption or fee free scholarship. Payment by instalments is available.

You may continue with an enrolment into this course if you are not eligible for subsidised training, however the full training fee will be applicable. There are conditions to enrolment if you are a Temporary Visa Holder. To discuss your visa status and eligibility to enrol please phone 131 241.
