This qualification applies to building designers who undertake building design
projects covered by the Building Code of Australia (BCA), except Construction
Type A buildings.

Building designers may specialise in residential projects, including new
buildings, heritage restorations and additions or renovations; or they may also
undertake commercial and industrial projects, such as factories, motels,
offices, restaurants, retail or service outlets and warehouses.

Credit (or recognition) for modules/units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences. Please discuss this with the teaching section when you enrol.

Building designer.

You will need to purchase additional equipment/ reference books/ consumables for some units. Access to the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards will also be required.
You will need to buy a small range of drafting materials and equipment (approx. cost $150).
You will need regular access to a Windows (preferred) or Mac computer with up to date virus protection and:
• access to internet connection
• Microsoft Office
• Adobe Acrobat Reader – available free from the Adobe website
• CAD/BIM software (Revit Architecture or ArchiCAD, available as a free student license once enrolled)
• minimum 4Gb RAM, good graphics to suit CAD/BIM software
• a range of software to produce drawings, presentations, specifications and briefs
OTEN will provide learning materials in this qualification in the form of online learning material.
It may be necessary for you to visit a TAFE library for reference material. Additional optional reference materials are listed in the Course Overview.

You will need to plan your study to ensure you progressively enrol and complete all the required units. Units will be added by your teacher at your request

The indicative cost of this course is $4,060.

This training is subsidised by the NSW government under Smart and Skilled. The student fee you will need to pay, will be determined according to your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, you may also be eligible for a concession fee, fee exemption or fee free scholarship.
