INDUSTRY DEMAND

There has been growing demand for teacher aides since 2011 and significant continued growth is expected through to 2023. An anticipated 85,000 jobs will open over the next 5 years to 2023. Also in high demand are teaching assistants in mainstream schools to support students with disability and learning difficulties.

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to practise responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

During your course, you will undertake a mandatory 100 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

TAFE NSW will help you arrange your work placement in a school (K-12) environment that caters for students with recognised additional needs.

Work placement generally only begins once you have had significant contact with your teacher and they are satisfied that you are ready to benefit from on-the-job industry learning.

To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • Intermediate language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and a sense of responsibility
  • A caring nature and passion for helping others learn

Physical ability

You must also have a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility to carry out:

  • Manual lifting
  • First aid responses including performing CPR while kneeling on the floor

Certain aspects of assessment rely on your physical ability to perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin at floor level, and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life.

If you are unable to meet the physical requirements, you will not be able to successfully complete this course.
