The course is intended to provide adults from a non-English speaking background
with the English language skills and the socio-cultural knowledge needed to
enhance their access to, and successful participation in, study at post-Year 12
level.

Successful completion of this course will enhance access to and participation in
study at post-Year 12 level by the development of academic literacy and by the
development of proficiency in English which is described at Level 3+ on the
International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR) scale. The ISLPR
scale refers to this level as Basic 'Vocational' Proficiency Plus.

The competencies will enable a person from a Language Background Other Than
English (LBOTE) with this qualification to:

- apply their knowledge of English to a wide variety of academic contexts and
scenarios
- apply their knowledge of western academic traditions to a wide variety of
academic contexts and scenarios
- take responsibility for their own progress with minimal support.

Successful completion of this course provides proof of proficiency in English to
be considered for a place at many Australian universities.
