This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry as a Master, Chief Mate or Watchkeeper Deck on ships of less than 500 gross tonnage (GT) in any operating area.

This qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Master <500 GT as described in Marine Order 70 and 71 (2014) under the Navigation Act 2012 by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

TAFE Digital deliver the Master less than 500 GT Diploma course in 3 x face to face blocks of tuition in Sydney over 12 - 13 weeks. The course calendar and block schedule is available by contacting the Maritime Section on 02 9715 8476.

To apply for recognition in one or more units you must clearly show that you have the equivalent and relevant skills, knowledge and experience of the unit or group of units.

For Credit transfer where you have completed previous studies either with TAFE NSW or with another tertiary provider complete the Enrolment Adjustment - Credit - Previous Studies form, and include any required evidence.

For Recognition of Prior Learning, attach your evidence to a completed Enrolment Adjustment – Credit – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) form and submit for assessment.

You are required to purchase 3 text books, along with AUS Chart 252 + plotting instruments and a Casio calculator. Detail is available in the Course Guide upon enrolment.
Upon enrolment you will receive selected hardcopy 'Maritime learning Resources' and an Assignment Book containing 13 assignments. The Online Learning Support site (OLS) is accessible after enrolment where all assignments can be downloaded along with a range of learning resources.
The Diploma qualification is completed and your testamur issued when all units that TAFE Digital deliver, along with all AMSA approved short courses are completed. Recognition is given for all short courses on completion of an application form after sighting certificates, this is explained during your course.

This course is approved for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you are able to apply to the Commonwealth for a loan to cover all or part of your fees.
