This skill set covers the competencies required by building surveyors or certifiers who apply knowledge of compliance requirements and construction methods and materials to the implementation of statutory building surveying requirements or to the provision of advisory building surveying services.

It applies to services provided for Class 1 and 10 buildings and structures as defined in the Building Code of Australia (BCA), up to three storeys and not more than 2000 square metres in floor area.

Pathways Information
The completion of this skill set provides a pathway to the Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying and a range of other CPC qualifications.

Target Group
This skill set is for people currently working as, or intending to work as, private or municipal building surveyors specifically on Class 1 and Class 10 buildings and structures as defined in the BCA.

Although there are no formal educational entry requirements for this course, OTEN recommends that;
- Computer Skills are Vital
- You must be able to study and work independently
- You have high level of Language skills, letter and report writing as well as research skills.
- You have Maths skills; ability to calculate and solve maths solutions.
- You have good internet access.

Before we can finalise your enrolment we need to be sure you are aware of a couple of things.

We strongly suggest that you contact the licencing body in your state, prior to the finalisation of your enrolment for accreditation purposes.


• We also require for you to submit verification that you have or will obtain a Construction Induction white card (NSW Workcover white card) or equivalent in your state or territory before entering a building site, and ;

• Confirmation that you are able to gain supervised access to a number of building sites at various stages of construction, to undertake building inspections thus enabling compliance with the course assessment criteria and finally; these sites must include, residential, industrial and commercial sites. It would be an advantage if you were employed in, or in the process of gaining employment in the construction industry.

• The course is in the developmental phase which means that we are still in the process of writing the course. We can still enrol you we just haven’t completed writing all the subjects.

• You will need to contact the licencing body in your state and gain an understanding of any additional requirements for accreditation in your state to ascertain if enrolment is a viable option for you.

If during or after your enrolment, the course in which you are enrolled is updated in line with national industry standards, the Institute reserves the right to transition you into an alternate course. If this becomes necessary, the Institute will advise you of the change and the arrangements which will be available for you to complete your alternate course.

There are no entry requirements for this skill set.

Credit (or recognition) for modules/units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences. Please discuss this with the teaching section when you enrol.

You don't need to study what you already know! The skills, knowledge and experience you have gained from your previous learning, work experience and life in general may be taken into account.

To apply for recognition in one or more units you must clearly show that you have the equivalent and relevant skills, knowledge and experience of the unit or group of units.

For Credit transfer where you have completed previous studies either with TAFE NSW or with another tertiary provider complete the Enrolment Adjustment - Credit - Previous Studies form, and include any required evidence.

For Recognition of Prior Learning, attach your evidence to a completed Enrolment Adjustment – Credit – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) form and submit for assessment.
